Prior to living in the Netherlands, he had lived in Recklinghausen, Germany, with his wife Elly, nee Moses, and their daughter Ruth. He had been a merchant and had defied the Nazi orders to close his shop. When he learned that he was about to be arrested, he fled to the Netherlands. His in-laws, Hermann and Sophie Moses, also from Recklinghausen, legally emigrated to Amsterdam soon afterwards, in March of 1943.
