My great grand aunt, Johanna Werkendam, known to all as Ann, was the sister of my great grand father Zadok and daughter of Mozes Isaac Werkendam and Duijfe Turfkruijer. She was a wonderful cook and many a family gathering which included my grandfather often took place in her home on shabbat. Her written recipe for her delicious "Pears with koogel" became a well loved family recipe and was passed down to the current generations in the Netherlands but copies have been found in Australia also. Memories can live on and come to life through stories and photos but the yummy tastes of traditional Dutch Jewish cooking is also then a part of a family's history.
