Gerhard Calmann

Gerhards parents, Anna Meyerhoff and Georg Calmann had passed away when Gerhard came to the Netherlands on March 30th, 1939, with a Kindertransport. He stayed in the Quarantine in Rotterdam (Beneden Heijplaat) for 2 weeks and was then moved to the protestant home for refugee children in Steenwijk (Fredeshiem). When this home closed all the children moved to Dieren (Johannashof). This facility was closed in the summer of 1940. Gerhard moved to Angerlo (close to Doesburg).
In "Bloembollen voor Westerbork" Alle G. Hoekema writes that Gerhard was possibly betrayed by the neighbours. A fellow refugee child suggests that Gerhard might have turned himself in because he was depressed because of a broken relationship.
