Manfried was born in 1915 in Emden, Germany. Third child of Marianne (born as de Beer) and Adolf Gössels, was brother of Theda (1912) and Leonhard (1913).

In 1933 the Gössels family moved to Amsterdam with his grandmother Regina de Beer. He worked as a butcher. He got married with Sara Agtsteribbe on July 22^nd 1942.
