Jozef Blitz

Experience in the Holocaust

Jozef Blitz was born on 23-Jul-1915 in Amsterdam as the second son of Sara and Meijer Blitz. Although he registered for the military, he was permanently relieved due to his brother Simon’s military service. He completed at least the 2nd class at a Gymnasium and was employed as a shop assistant in a frame and mirror store on Amstelkade 68. Jozef Blitz married Alida Maria Schutte (b. 12-Sep-1918 in Amsterdam) on 19-Jun-1940 in Amsterdam. The couple was living at J.M. Kemperstraat 46 III when they had their first daughter, who died soon after as an infant on 24-Dec-1940 in Amsterdam.

On 19-Aug-1942, Jozef Blitz reported to the police that his wallet had been stolen from his jacket that had been hanging at his work. In the wallet, he had money, his ID and a ration card. On 04-Apr-1943, Jozef and Alida Maria had their second daughter.

Jozef Blitz was deported on 15-Apr.1943 to Vught, where he received the prisoner number 6167. Possibly due to an interfaith marriage, Alida Maria Schutte and their daughter were never deported. During his time at Vught, Jozef fell ill, though no further details are available. He was transported on the first transport directly from Vught to Auschwitz, along with many others on this transport who were of mixed faith marriages. The prisoners had their hair cut off and were forced to wear striped uniforms and wooden shoes. This train was a cattle car. Upon arrival on 17-Nov-1943, there was no direct segregation for the 1,148 deportees, but rather all were assigned for slave labor. The prisoners were tattooed with the numbers 163201-163759 and 68090-68678. Although he survived for a short time in the camp, Jozef Blitz died on 31-Jan-1944 in Auschwitz at the age of 28.
