Het politiebureau Houtmarkt had begin 1943 de handen vol aan talloze inbraken in huizen in de Jodenbuurt, waarvan de bewoners waren gedeporteerd. Vaak waren de verdachten tieners, in dit geval jongens van 14 en 9 jaar. Ze werden betrapt op diefstal van twee schilderijen uit de woning van het gezin Winnik.
