The Buitenkant family was able to stay in Hilversum thanks to the so-called incurable and contagious illness of Samuel Goudeket. After his death the family stayed on their original address until April 1943, aided by neighbours and friends for food and heat. The owner of the house refused to ask for any rent during that time. After that time the members of the family went into hiding.
