Josef Steinhauer (shoe maker) and Leontina Schapira married on op 14 August 1932 in Vienna. The young couple had a daughter Gerda on 6 June 1933 (in Elburg she was known as Kitty).
In October 1938 the family arrived in Elburg. They had fled because the situation had become very dangerous for them in Austria. The sister of Leontine Steinhauer-Schapira lived in Elburg. The Steinhauer family found temporary shelter with the Förster family in the Jufferenstraat 10 in Elburg. In January 1939 they moved to Bloemstraat 24.
After the German invasion the Steinhauer family moved on 27 May 1940 from Elburg to Amsterdam (Nieuwe Herengracht 32; later Rijnstraat 12 II) in the assumption that it would be safer in the big city. They were arrested there during one of the first raids in 1942 and deported to Auschwitz.
