David van Coeverden was married to Schoontje Meijer. He was a cattle dealer. He and his wife had six children: Mozes (1903), Geertje (1905), Jacob (1911), Betsie (1915) and two children who survived the war. The family lived at 1 Tramstraat in Coevorden. The family was known to be pious.
