The Bogen family, consisting of a father, mother and young child, fled Germany for Beek in 1939. They stayed with a relative temporarily, but when this person moved, the family had to find other accommodations. Samuel and Luise spent a year searching for a new place to live. In early 1940, when this proved unsuccessful, they moved to Westerbork, which was then still a refugee camp. The camp had been established by the Dutch government in 1938 as a centre for German refugees, who were mostly Jews. Samuel Bogen was given a leading role at the camp. As a result, the Bogen family was not deported until 6 September 1944 and was taken to Theresienstadt rather than Auschwitz. On 4 October 1944, however, Samuel and Luise Bogen were deported to Auschwitz. No trace of their child remains.
