About Levie Cohen

Levie was the son of Marcus (Max) Cohen and Aaltje (Ali) de Wilde. His parents divorced in August 1941. Levie went to the Hof-school at the Raadhuisplein, the address where his father had a business. This school had many liberal-Jewish students. In 1942, Levie was excluded from education by the German occupying power. On a summer day his teacher accidentally saw Levie sitting on the playground at the school under the open windows. He said: "Please madam, go on teaching and I can still follow your lessons.” After this, a sister of his teacher taught Levie and other Jewish students for several months. The afternoon before his deportation Levie came to his teacher and her sister, who lived in Huizum, and gave each of them a tea cup. On the tea cup was written: "In honour of your birthday" as one of them had her birthday on 7 November.
