John (or Isisdore) van den Bergh was a son of Arnoldus I. van den Bergh and Auguste Soberski. He was a brother of Celestine Anna. At different times, he was the director and co-director of the firm Arnold I. van de Bergh Ltd., later called NV Arnold I. van den Bergh. Following mergers with the firm of NV W. van der Lugt en zonen and with Varseveld, a firm in Leerdam, he became the director of the new company, NV Emballagefabrieken en Houthandel, from 1934 to 1936, and served on this company's supervisory board until 1940. He was also a supervisory director of a number of large Dutch companies and the vice-president of the Nederlandse Hout Unie.
