Racheltje Barendse was a daughter of Bernardus Barendse and Engeltje Koekkoek. She married Hartog Kalkoene in 1899 in Rotterdam. When she was 24 she lost her one and a half years old firstborn child Elizabeth. Less than three years later she lost her husband, who was then only 27 years old. She was left with her ten months old son Bernardus (Bernard). She remained a widow for the rest of her life.
