Betje de Lange, born in Elburg in 1887, was one of the nine children of Joseph de Lange and Matje Hamberg. She was unmarried. Her father, born 1847 in Elburg, died in his residence 15 June 1919. His wife Matje Hamberg passed away in Elburg too, on 26 March 1941.
Betje de Lange had eight siblings, of whom Hartog, Jannetje and Mietje have survived the Holocaust; her baby-sister Eve died in 1893, only a few months old. But Aaron, Dina, Machiel Aaron, Jacob and she herself were killed in the Shoah.
According notes on her registration card of the Jewish Council, she was “Nurse-Operator” of Rest home De Lange at Muiderschans* 100 in Amsterdam since 1936. She was “a very nice woman” and she was a licenced nurse, also maternity nurse and was previously employed in Rotterdam. She was exempted from deportation "because of function“ until further notice but eventually she has been deported to Auschwitz 7 September 1943, together with her brothers Aaron and Machiel Aäron. Betje de Lange has been killed immediately on arrival there 10 September 1943. Her brother Machiel Aäron lost his life in Auschwitz 31 March 1944 but from her brother Aaron the location and his date of death are unknown.
