Pauline Bernstein studied piano at the conservatory in Munich. All her life, she made and taught music. In 1892, she married Maurits van den Berg, an officer in the Royal Dutch East Indies Army (KNIL). They lived in the Dutch East Indies for a few years, and she gave birth to two children there. In 1900 the family returned to The Hague. Pauline van de Berg-Bernstein was widowed in 1938. During the war, she went into hiding in a rest home, but her location was given away. Her children survived the war, one in hiding and the other by escaping to Switzerland.
