Markus Friedberg was son of Soroch Friedberg and Rebecca Knap. He was born in 1912 in Rotterdam but moved with his familie in 1924 to Antwerp where the family settled at Lamorinièrestraat 26. In 1931 Markus lived at Vestingstraat 59 in Antwerp but returned that year to Rotterdam where he was registered at the address Heer Vrankestraat 20c.
Markus had a brother Leo, who has survived the Holocaust and also a younger sister, Sophie Debora, who lived in Antwerp,. She had two children in 1937, a twin, named Denise and Willy. Also his sister and both nieces have been killed in the Shoah.
Again Markus Friedberg returned to Antwerp and married Katheina Betty de Jong, a daughter of Abraham Hartog Winnik de Jong and Jeannette Sanders. In 1940 their son Alexander was born in Berchem. From 1942 till the date of deportation, Markus, Jeannette and theis son Alexander lived in Leiden at Haagweg 50.
Markus, Jeannette en Alexander Friedberg have been deported from transit camp Westerbork to Auschwitz on 5 October 1942. Upon arrival Markus' wife Jeannette and little son Alexander were killed immediately on 8 October 1942. Markus however has been forced to work for the nazis and lost his life eventually somewhere in Mid Europe on 31 August 1943.
