While Robert was staying in the Dommelhuis he was in training to become an electronics engineer. But in July 1939 he became sick. He had active lung tuberculosis and was admitted to a sanatorium
in Hilversum, where he stayed until October 22nd, 1940. After his release it was not considered wise to move him to camp Westerbork which is why by exception he got permission to move in with relatives, the Berg family, in the Michelangelostraat in Amsterdam.
