Mozes Stibbe, a son of Elias Salomon Stibbe and Fronica Gosschalk, was born on 13 September 1874 in Zwolle. He started his carreer as bakers aid but later he became a merchant in gunny sacks. He married on 25 October 1898 in Zaandam to Sara Stodel, a daughter of Joseph Stodel and Betje Metz, who was born on 9 May 1870 in Amsterdam. The couple had four children, namely Rosalie in 1899, Elisabeth in 1900, Elias in 1904 and Joseph in 1906. Rosalie however died already on 27 January 1900 in Amsterdam, only six months old. The other children were murdered during the Shoah.
Their other daughter, Elisabeth, married in June 1922 in Amsterdam the diamond worker Jacob Cardozo, a son of Jacob Cardozo and Elisabeth Koekoek. He was born in 1891 in Amsterdam bur already since 1921 working and living in Antwerp. After the marriage was concluded, Elisabeth also left for Antwerp where their daughter Elisabeth was born on 21 February 1929.
With his wife and both his sons, Moze Stibbe left Amsterdam for Middelburg at the end of February 1923 and remained there till May 1931, then moved to Rotterdam and thereafter in June 1934 to Ruyschstraat 84 in Amsterdam. Their son Elias returned however in Rotterdam again in December 1934; his parents and brother Joseph remained in Amsterdam and still lived there at various addresses.
On 4 April 1938, Mozes’ wife Sara Stodel passed away but it is unkown where she had been interred. On 20 March 1940, Mozes Stibbe remarried Sellie Eljon; she was a daughter of Eliazer Jacob Eljon ans Sophia Weltevreede and born on 23 December 1875 in Amsterdam. Sellie had been previously married to Israel Koren, who had died on 3 October 1937. Together with him she had three children, namely Isaac, Jansje and Branca Koren.
After moving, Mozes Stibbe and his son Joseph were also officially registered that 20th of March 1940 at Rustenburgerstraat 52 1st floor and after the marriage was concluded, Sellie Eljon too moved in with them there. It would also turn out to be their last known address in the Netherlands.
On 4 February 1943, the 37-year old warehouse worker and still unmarried Joseph Stibbe was arrested and carried off to Westerbork, from where he was put on transport on 9 February to Auschwitz. On arrival there, Joseph was selected for forced labor but it is unknown where in the end he was put to work, nor the date when he lost his life. Therefor, after the war, the Dutch Ministry of Justice commissioned the Municipality of Amsterdam to draw up a certificate of death for Joseph Stibbe, in which was established that he has died in Auschwitz on 30 April 1943.
More than two months later, on 13 April 1943, Mozes Stibbe and his 2nd spouse Sellie Eljon were arrested and from their home carried off to Westerbork, where they had to wait in barrack 57 for their deportation. On 20 April 1943 they were deported to Sobibor where they both plus 1164 other deportees, were inmmediately gassed on arrival there on 23 April 1943.
