Biography

About Joseph Hartogensis and his family.

Joseph Hartogensis, born on 9 December 1863 as the second son of Jacobus Jeronimus Hartogensis and Sophie van Ham, left Tilburg for Amsterdam on 8 July 1881. His brother Isidore followed him, both still unmarried and they stayed among others at Jodenbreestraat 22 and at Binnen Amstel 147. They worked as servants.

In April 1884 they returned to Tilburg. Isidore became an office clerk and commercial traveller in shoes. He wa also a state lottery collector. He stayed among others in Den Bosch and Amsterdam but returned to Tilburg in 1904, where he eventually passed away in 1922, unmarried. Joseph however became a metal dealer by profession.

On 8 July 1895, Joseph married in Zwolle Margot Jacobs, a daughter of Alexander Jacobs and Johanna Fortuin. She was born in Hoogeveen on 17 April 1866. The couple had three children, namely Alex Joseph in 1897, Johanna Sophie in 1898 and in 1902 Karel , all born in Den Haag. Only Alex Joseph, who was married in 1925 to Marie Anna van Minden, was murdered in Auschwitz on 11 February 1944, together with his wife. Both the other children survived the war because of their mixed marriages.

Joseph and his wife lived in Den Haag. They moved several times in the city but also outside it; they have lived among others also in Mook and in Voorschoten. On 7 September 1931 Joseph left for Zeist, Heerenlaan 42. His wife Margot left Den Haag for Leiden in January 1933 and lived there at Hoge Rijndijk 24. Margot passed away in Leiden on 11 December 1938, when she stayed at the address De Laat de Kanterstraat 2. Joseph Hartogensis passed away in his then hometown of Driebergen Rijssenburg on 27 February 1941.
