Carel Zadoks studeerde vanaf 26 oktober 1920 rechten aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Op 29 mei 1931 promoveerde hij tot doctor in de rechtsgeleerdheid op het proefschrift "Verbod van getuigenbewijs tegen den inhoud der schriftelijke acte (artikel 1934 van het Burgerlijk Wetboek) ".

Carel is een zoon van Simon Zadoks (Dordrecht, 9 mei 1874 - A'dam, 7 feb 1953) en Elisabeth Rosalie Cosman (A'dam, 22 augustus 1878 - A'dam, 4 november 1908). Zijn moeder overleed toen Carel 5 jaar oud was.
