Joseph Pronkhorst was de zoon van Samuel Pronkhorst (7 juni 1892) en Catharina Pronkhorst-Elsas (6 december 1893). Joseph had een broer, Abraham, die twee jaar ouder was (18 september 1920) en twee neven die Simon heetten. Met beide neven correspondeerde hij vanuit werkkamp Geesbrug in Drenthe.
