Hijman is een zoon van Levi Cohen (Assen, 28 juli 1836) en Maria Nieweg. Hij trouwde 26 april 1911 met Rebecca Boas (Tiel, 10 december 1885), dochter van Benedictus Samuel Boas en Sara de Casseres.
