In november 1940 uit haar onderwijsfunctie ontheven, maart 1941 ontslagen. In tegenstelling tot andere buurten werden in de oostelijke binnenstad van Amsterdam de niet-joodse kinderen van school gehaald. Nadat dit op haar school, de J.D. Meyerschool, was gebeurd, werd Gontje hier weer door de gemeente aangesteld.De school heette nu de 'Joodsche school nr 2'.
