Willem Deen was a son of Marcus Deen and Vrouwtje Meijer van Kreveld. He came from a family with four children. He wanted to become a teacher, but eventually became a diamond worker. He married Elisabeth Nerden in 1919 in Zaandam. Because it was hard to find work as a diamond worker he started a poultry farm.
