Marcus van Stratum was married to Rachel Mok. The couple had four children: Hartog, Salamon, Saartje and Mina. The two eldest children lived at a different address in 1941. Saartje was mentally disabled. Rachel van Stratum-Mok was being cared for at the Apeldoornse Bos. According to survivors, Marcus van Stratum fought with the police when he was arrested at his home.
