Rudolph van Dam studied medicine in Groningen. In 1937 he sat for his medical finals. On 28 March 1941 he was awarded a PhD degree for his thesis about cerebellar gliomas. In July 1940 he received a one-year appointment as anatomist-curator of the pathology laboratory of the Groningen state university as the successor of E. Behr.
