Harold Lodewijk Duizend

In this poignant documentary Willy Lindwer chronicles the fate of a number of unknown Jewish children who were deported from the Netherlands and murdered in the death camps. Stories from the lives of nine of them are recounted in this work.

The Dutch author Cees Nooteboom refers to Paul and Harold Duizend in his book ‘Nomad's Hotel’ (Vintage Publishing 2007) in an essay about his friend photographer Eddy Posthuma de Boer, a class mate from Paul and Harold Duizend.

In addition, a Jokos file (number 7568) on this family is at the Amsterdam Municipal Archive. Access is subject to authorization from the Stichting Joods Maatschappelijk Werk.The Jokos file reveals that a claim was lodged for compensation for valuables surrendered to the Lippmann-Rosenthal looting bank (L-claim, number 2820/8000).

Harold was een leerling van de 1e Montessorischool aan de Corellistraat in Amsterdam. In deze school is een plaquette aangebracht waarop zijn naam staat vermeld.

Harolds naam komt ook voor op een van de koffers van het kunstwerk In Memoriam van Willem Volkersz.

Van de 172 (oud-)leerlingen van de 1e Montessorischool in Amsterdam die in de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden vermoord waren er 169 joods. Zij staan hier in de rechter kolom alfabetisch vermeld.

Op het Olympiaplein in Amsterdam werd op 20 juni 2022 het monument ‘Schaduwen’ onthuld als herinnering aan de grootste razzia tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Amsterdam op 29 juni 1943. 

Vanuit de gemeente Amsterdam en het Stadsdeel Zuid is de wens uitgesproken de scholen in de buurt kennis te laten maken met het monument en de gebeurtenis die het herdenkt. Om het bezoek aan het monument zo waard…
