Sylvain Winkel studied medicine at the Gemeentelijke Universiteit in Amsterdam (now known as the University of Amsterdam), where he received a doctoral degree in 1902. He became a family doctor, working in Termunten at first and later in Rotterdam. Sylvain Winkel was married to Saartje Rippe. They had two children, Siegfried en Henderina, who lived elsewhere.
