On 27 January 1928 Stephan Hirschberger, his wife Selma Mayer and their five-year-old son Erich, moved from Oberhausen to Mönchengladbach. Stephan previously earned a living as a merchant but most likely came to Mönchengladbach to work for the company of the father of his sister in law.
