Leijzer (or Lazarus) van Gelder was the son of Jacob van Gelder and Sara Blok. He married in 1897 in Groningen to Rachel Frank, who died in 1923. They had ten children: their oldest daughter Sara and another child died before the war. One child survived the war. Rika, Jacob, Philip, Samuel, Reina, Herman and Lea did not survive the war.
