Dr. Ruth Kantorowicz was an economist. Since 1936 she lived with the Ursulinen (community of women) in Venlo. She occupied herself with household work. Ruth Kantorowicz was de enige dochter van de arts Samuel Kantorowicz. Zij werd op 8 september 1934 gedoopt in de rooms-katholieke St. Elisabethkerk in haar geboortestad Hamburg. Kort daarvoor, in augustus 1933 was ze als "niet-arische" vrijwilliger bij de stadsbibliotheek ontslagen. Tot maart 1935 kon Ruth nog in een potloodfabriek werken, maar daarna was er voor Joden in Duitsland geen mogelijkheid meer om nog werk te krijgen.
Edith Stein kende Ruth Kantorowicz sinds 1906, toen zij een poosje in Hamburg was. Edith was intussen in het Karmelietessen klooster in Keulen ingetreden en nam de zorg voor Ruth op zich. Ze regelde dat ze in Keulen hier en daar wat kon werken totdat de Karmelietessen in Maastricht haar zouden opnemen. Maar na tien maanden proeftijd werd ze toch afgewezen.
