Herbert Herzstein was the son of Louis Herzstein and Adele Jacobs. He had two brothers (of whom one died at a young age) and a sister. The family lived in Nuttlar in Germany. At the end of the 1930's Herbert and his father were forced by the nazis to work at the loam-pits in Brigge, making bricks.
