Lodewijk Hartog Sarlouis was a university lecturer at the Nederlands Israëlitisch Seminarium. In 1912, he was appointed rabbi in Amsterdam and in 1936 he was appointed chief rabbi. In December of that year, he gave his acceptance speech in the New Synagogue (the Neie Sjoel) at the Jonas Daniël Meyerplein.
