About Andries de Metz

Andries de Metz was the son of Bernard de Metz and Mina Leviticus. His father was part-owner of the sweets wholesalers A. de Metz, now De Metz BV. Andries was well-known in the muncipality of Leeuwarden. He taught mathematics and is described as a brilliant mathematician. Andries was one of the directors of L.A.C. Frisia football club in 1883. He was a devout man with an interest in Jewish literature.
When war broke out in 1940, Andries, as an officer in the Dutch army, was given the task of defending the Ministry of Economic Affairs in The Hague. According to an eye-witness, Andries defended it heroically to the last. Andries told a boyhood friend who worked at the ministry that he would take his life in the event of capitulation. He committed suicide on 15 May. Andries was buried at the Jewish cemetery in Leeuwarden on 5 June 1940. His grave is tended by the Dutch State.
