Maurits van Thijn was a son of Levie van Thijn (b. 1859) and Elisabeth van Bergen (1854-1922). In 1913, he marrie Heintje Kopuit (1889-1920) in Weesp. They had two daughters, but their firstborn passed away within a few months. After the death of his wife, Maurits remarried in 1921. With Rebekka van Coevorden, he had four other children. Anna, the daughter from his first marriage, lived with the van Thijn-van Coevorden family.
