Meijer van Velzen was a son of Salomon van Velzen and Dina Verdoner. He married Margaretha Nova on 16 Maart 1921 in Amsterdam, a daughter of George Nova and Clara Gobets. The couple had six children of whom four have survived the Holocaust. Only Salomon and Clara, just as their parents, were killed in the Shoah.
Meijer van Velzen was registered as a rubber sticker in 1941, but in fact he was a diamond polisher for Asser in Amsterdam and Antwerp.
