Samuel Rubens was a son of Karel Rubens and Roosje Hartveld. In this family seven children were born, namely Samuel self, Machiel, also known as Michiel, Hester, Daniël, Sellie, Marcus and Leo. His sister Hester, born 23 September 1882, died as young child 18 Mei 1884. His sister Sellie, born 21 June 1886, passed away 24 October 1936. The other siblings were all killed in the Shoah.
Samuel Rubens was born in Rotterdam but moved rather quick to Belgium. The Foreign Dossiers of the City of Antwerp nr. 101053 show that he has resided at Anderlecht, Berchem and Antwerpd. Presumably he married Rachel Kool in Anderlecht. She was a daughter of Israël Kool and Saartje Goudsmit. The couple had a son 22 June 1907 in Brussels, Charles, also named as Karel.
12 January 1917 the Samuel Rubens family arrived in Rotterdam from Antwerp and the were registered at the address Van Meekerenstraat 80. There were no removals within the municipality of Rotterdam which might indicate that Samuel Rubens died at his own home-address. He passed away 16 February 1941 in Rotterdam the the funeral records at the Jewish cemetery in Rotterdam reveal that Samuel Rubens was buried there.
His wife Rachel was deported 12 October 1942 to Auschwitz and killed there upon arrival 15 October 1942. His son Charles married 1933 Berendina Verhagen; they might have survived the war.
