Biography

The fate of Rozette Barend, her husband Levie Scheffer and their little daughter Keetje.

Rozette Barend was the youngest child of Salomon Barend and Lena IJzerkoper. She married 17 February 1937 in Amsterdam at the age of 26 the 28-year old Levie (Louis) Scheffer, a son of Manuel Scheffer and Keetje Moscoviter. On 5 May 1938 their baby-daughter Keetje was born.

Rozette Barend worked as factory employee and lived at home with her parents. In April 1928 was her parentel home in the Cilliersstraat 17 in Amsterdam, where her father Salomon passed away in January 1936. Her mother Lena stayed there with her children living at home, among them Jacob, Rozette and Nathan till 18 February 1937, when they moved to Grensstraat 11 parterre. Moreover, Jacob Barend left for the Camperstraat 14 after his wedding to Cato Agstteribbe on 5 August 1937. Rozette’s newly wed husband, who made a living as a greengrocer, came living in with his newly wed wife, his new mother-in-law and his new brother-in-law, the day after his marriage. And on 27 March 1940 all moved to Ruyschstraat 63 2nd floor in Amsterdam-East.

Levie (Louis) Scheffer had a “Sperre”, an exemption from deportation from the Jewish Council, so also his wife and daughter Keetje were exempted from deportation for the time being. Up from 15 June 1942 he had this job as vendor in the department vegetable distribution of the Jewish Council at the Jewish Market at Gaaspstraat in Amsterdam-South.

In the end of May 1943, all exemptions were cancelled by the Germans and Levie Scheffer and his family ended up in Westerbork, from where they have been put on transport to Sobibor on 29 June 1943. On arrival there on 2 July 1943, they were all immediately killed.
