Andries van Stratum was a son of Lion van Stratum and Alida Pijl. He was born in Amsterdam on 7 September 1884 and earned his money being a cigar maker. On 3 June 1909 he married Marianne Vos in Amsterdam, a daughter of Hijman Vos and Lea van West, who was born there on 18 October 1885. The couple Van Stratum-Vos had one son, Lion, who was born on 23 September 1912 in Amsterdam.
On 14 Febuary 1913, Andries left with his family for Borgerhout (Antwerp), where he worked as a sawyer of diamonds. They returned to Amsterdam on 16 January 1915 and lived in with Andries’ sister Helena van Stratum, who was divorced in August 1914 from Hijman Stodel. On 28 April 1917 Andries and his family left there and moved in with his parents, who then lived at Wijttenbachstraat 35 3rd floor in Amsterdam.
After having resided in Amsterdam between 1917 and 1936 at various addresses, like Vrolikstraat 130, Nieuwe Achtergracht 6, Amstel 113 and Spoorbaanstraat 4, Andries, his wife and son left again for Belgium on 1 July 1936 and moved into a house at Thaliastraat 57 in the municipality of Berchem. And on 11 June 1940 the moved in Berchem to Bacchuslaan 4. Meanwhile, Andries van Straten had become a merchant of Japanese articles, enabling him to provide for his family well.
Lion van Stratum, the son of Andries and Marianne, was a sales representative and since 1930 he lived on his own in Amsterdam. In 1936 he stayed shortly in Antwerp but up from 26 January 1937 his domicile was Amsterdam, where he married Eva Cohen in June 1943, a daughter of Levy Anthonie Cohen and Flora Cohen-Denneboom. Still, both were killed during the Shoah.
On 15 January 1944, Andries van Stratum and his wife Marianne Vos were deported from Mechelen to Auschwitz with Convoy XXIII (23) in the so-called “Jewish Transport”; on that date there was also a Z-transport: Z for Zigeuners – Gypsies. Distinction was made… Both transports arrived in Auschwitz on 17 January 1944 and most likely, Andries and Marianne were killed then in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau upon arrival there.
The Belgian authorities however have established and published in the Belgian Gazette of 5 January 1952, that Andries van Stratum has died between 15 January 1944 and 1 June 1945 at an unknown place. For his wife Marianne van Stratum-Vos has been formally established that she has died in Auschwitz between 15 and 25 January 1944. The place and date of death for Andries van Stratum at the website Joods Monument will be recorded therefore as “died at an unknown place at an unknown date” and for Marianne van Stratum-Vos will be stated that she has died in Auschwitz on 25 January 1944.
