Israël Katan kwam uit Rotterdam; Hij werd geboren in de Tuinderslaan, wijk 15/8 nr 8. Met 19 jaar werd hij gekeurd voor de dienstplicht. Daaruit weten we dat hij 1 m 69 lang was – voor die tijd gemiddeld – ,  zwart haar, bruine ogen, grote neus en mond en spitse kin. Hij werd goedgekeurd; of hij dienst heeft gedaan weet ik niet.
