Irene Hellmann-Redlich

Irene Hellmann-Redlich, born in Moravia, was married to Paul Hellmann, the Austrian owner of a textiles factory, who died in Vienna shortly before the Second World War. They both played an important role in Vienna’s cultural life.

In het boek Op de foto in oorlogstijd. Studio Wolff, 1943 van Tamara Becker en An Huitzing (Lecturis, 2017) zijn foto's en een portret van Irene Hellmann-Redlich opgenomen en het verhaal van haar en haar familie verteld.

Op de foto in oorlogstijd gaat over een deel van het oeuvre van Annemie Wolff (1916-1994): de teruggevonden honderd fotorolletjes uit 1943 met portretten van 440 mensen.

In 1919, Richard Strauss dedicated his composition, "Schlechtes Wetter" (Opus 69, number 5) to Frau Irene Hellmann. The text comes from a poem by Heinrich Heine, first published in 1826, as part of "Die Heimkehr". In the poem, the narrator sees a woman with a lantern out in the wind and snow and imagines that she is out to purchase ingredients to make a cake for her daughter that is at home asleep…
