Saartje van Stratum was mentally handicapped. Every two weeks she walked from the Nieuwe Achtergracht to relatives in the Nieuwe Leliestraat in the Jordaan neigbourhood. There she always got ten cents. On her way home Saartje bought a sachet of broken cookies at the shop Jamin for the amount of 5 cents.

Marcus van Stratum was married to Rachel Mok. The couple had four children: Hartog, Salamon, Saartje and Mina. The two eldest children lived at a different address in 1941.
