Salomon Levie and his family

Salomon Levie (known as Sallie) was a son of Eliazar Levie and Betje Hartog. On 23 November 1922 he married Mina Monas, daughter of Abraham Monas and Sara de Vries. The couple had three children: Eliazar Max (died in 1926), Charles Bertus and Elly Max.

Salomon Levie was a meat cutter. The family lived at 220 Voorstraat in Spijkenisse, where they owned a butcher shop. They were part of the village community. Salomon and Mina were members of the choral society, and Charles played the trumpet in the music band. Charles attended the secondary modern in Hellevoetsluis. In 1941 he had to leave that school and ride the tram every day to attend the Jewish secondary modern in Rotterdam. Charles studied for his bar mitzvah with Mrs. van Blankenstein in Heenvliet. On 21 November 1940 he was bar mitzvahed at the synagogue of the Oude Lieden Gesticht in Rotterdam. Mrs. Van Blankenstein arranged for Chief Rabbi A.B.N. Davids to officiate.
