Samuel (known as Sampie) Goldsteen was a son of Israël Goldsteen and Naatje Zeehandelaar. He was unmarried and lived together with his unmarried cousin Betje Goldsteen, the daughter of Samuel Goldsteen and Jansje Cohen.
Sampie Goldsteen, who had difficulty walking because he had suffered from polio as a boy, ran a newsstand at Kerkplein in Meppel. In January 1942 this newsstand was closed down by the occupying forces. When Meppel’s Jewish townspeople, including Betje, were taken from their homes on 3 October 1942, Sampie Goldsteen was not at home. The local police wanted to spare him, because he would not be able to walk to the station. But when the last members of Meppel’s Jewish community were taken away to Westerbork by bus on 6 October, Sampie Goldsteen was among them.
