About Lodewijk Hartog Sarlouis

Lodewijk Hartog Sarlouis was a university lecturer at the Nederlands Israëlitisch Seminarium. In 1912, he was appointed rabbi in Amsterdam and in 1936 he was appointed chief rabbi. In December of that year, he gave his acceptance speech in the New Synagogue (the Neie Sjoel) at the Jonas Daniël Meyerplein.
Lodewijk Sarlouis was active in the community and he occupied many reponsible functions in various organisations. He took the initiative to set up the Jewish higher secondary school.
