Biography

About Reina van Leer

Reina van Leer, daughter of Leman van Leer and Froukje Levie, was a maidservant. She never married. After working in Amsterdam and The Hague, she moved to Meppel. She lived on the Vledderstraat and later - from 1932 - at 13 Touwstraat, across from the synagogue.
Reina van Leer observed Jewish religious prescriptions. Her niece used to visit her and remembers:
'When I visited her in Meppel on Saturdays, she would ask: "Would you like a cup of tea?" If I answered that I would, she would say: "Then light the gas yourself to heat the water." She would not light the gas on the Shabbat.'

Reina van Leer was taken from her home on 3 October 1942 and was deported to Auschwitz via Westerbork.

This person lived alone or no information about family members is known or traceable.

This person is commemorated on a memorial in Meppel. More information on this memorial can be found (in Dutch) on the website of the Nationaal Comité 4 en 5 mei.
