Israel Teitelbaum arrived in Amsterdam from Germany on 5 April 1939. He lived with his foster father there at 140 Prins Hendrikkade. On 30 January 1940 he became a ward at the Hof van Moerkerken youth aliyah home in Mijnsheerenland. He remained there until the home was closed on 16 October 1940, after which he and a few other wards moved to the Paviljoen Loosdrechtse Rade youth aliyah home in Loosdrecht.
Israel Teitelbaum worked for a farmer in Loosdrecht. While playing with a dog on the farm, he broke his leg. His broken leg was set at the Roman Catholic Hospital in Hilversum.
He remained in Loosdrecht until 7 December 1942 and then went into hiding in Bussum.
The mayor of Loosdrecht requested that Israel Teitelbaum, who was suspected of having changed his place of residence without the required authorization, be located, detained and brought to trial. This description referred to Jews who had gone into hiding.
Upon returning from a daily walk to his place in hiding, Israel found the Gestapo waiting for him.
