An old friend remembers the following story. Eduard Frank worked before and during the war as an electrical engineer at the Philips factory in Eindhoven. He was deaf, but he could lip-read very well. In fact, he could lip-read so well, that after his visit a new customer phoned and asked if he could speak to him. The receptionist answered that that was not possible because Mr. Frank was deaf. The customer was amazed because he had just seen him and spoken to him. When the man heard that Eduard Frank could lip-read so well that he had not even noticed that he was deaf, he was very impressed.
When the war broke out, the friend wanted to give Eduard Frank a hiding place. Eduard refused because he did not want to bring his friend in danger. The family went into hiding somewhere else and Eduard was deported. His family survived the war.
