Biography

About Liepman Brilleslijper and his wife Theresia de Swarte.

Liepman Brilleslijper was a son of Ephraim Brilleslijper and Duifje Roodveld. He was born on 27 February 1871 in the Lange Houtstraat in Amsterdam, where his parents and sibs lived for a long time. At the time he was called up for examination for the National Militia in 1891, Liepman was a workman. Moreover, he was exempted from the Militia due to brotherly service.

On 5 August 1891, Liepman Brilleslijper married Theresia de Swarte. She was born in Amsterdam on 6 October 1867 as a daughter of Meijer de Swarte and Beletje Voet. After the wedding was concluded. the Brilleslijper-de Swarte couple moved into a house at Rapenburgerstraat 161; they lived subsequently in the Utrechtsedwarsstraat and up from 1902 their residence became Manegestraat 8 1st floor.  

The couple had 6 children, viz. Ephraim (26 Oct 1891), Beletje (8 Oct 1892), Duifje (27 Aug 1894), Meijer (25 Dec 1896), Lion (23 Mar 1899) and Marianne (30 May 1901). Only Duifje has survived the Holocaust; she passed asway in 1989 nearly 95 years old. Lion and Marianne and their families were murderded in the Shoah, but Ephraim, Beletje and Meijer have died in Amsterdam at young and very young age.

Liepman became a member of the ANDB since 19 February 1898, the Dutch Diamond Trade Union, where he was classified in group 4, brilliant cutters. His membership ended on 1 Januiary 1937 when he was 65 year of age and retired. During the years 1937-1941 he received a yearly pension of Dfl. 104,--

On 28 November 1942 Liepman and his wife Theresia were registered in Westerbork. However, they stayed there till February 1943, and on the 23th of that month, both were deported to Auschwitz in a transport of 1101 deportees in total. Upon arrival there on 26 February 1943 Liepman Brilleslijper and his wife Theresia de Swarte were immediately murdered in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Ultimately it turned out that there were  only 4 survivors of this transport.
