Pauline Bernstein studied piano at the conservatory in Munich. All her life, she made and taught music. In 1892, she married Maurits van den Berg, an officer in the Royal Dutch East Indies Army (KNIL). They lived in the Dutch East Indies for a few years, and she gave birth to two children there.
